The Italian chestnut growers enjoyed some good rainfall over the last few days in two main growing areas (Piemonte and Emilia Romagna). At this stage of the season, rain has a very positive effect on the chestnut trees which are already stronger and showing more husks compared to last year. In the South (Lazio, Cilento) some rain is foreseen in the next days which will also have a positive effect.
Therefore in all the Italian growing areas the situation seems better compared to last year in terms of volume, quality and availability.
The season will start as usual in week 37 with the first large-sized hybrids and then, after 2-3 weeks, with the traditional varieties.
The Covid-19 pandemic may affect also the chestnut market. We expect a potentially reduced interest from the street roasters: less tourists in the big cities and less country festivals may shift more volume to the wholesale markets and the supermarket retailers.
